Why Denali?

I went to school in the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. In the "backquard" was a mountain called Mount McKinley, which is commonly known as Denali meaning "the great one" in the Athabaskan language.

Denali is the name currently recognized by the State of Alaska. However, in 1896 the mountain was officially named Mount McKinley, after former United States' President William McKinley. But in 1980 the name of the mountain was changed back to Denali.

The geographical name maintains as Mount McKinley -- mainly for foreigners and tourists. Alaskans and natives use "Denali". So do I.

Denali is the highest mountain peak in North America, at a height of approx. 20,320 feet (6,194 m).

Luca, Denali, my "the great one"

Luca got his name for the memory of our Denali expedition in 1994. Thanks for the memories; Henrik Wessel, Leif Skipenes, Mike Sfraga, Greg and his brother, Phil and a few years ago died, due to an accident, Eric Lindskoog.
